Fresh colour and a touch of mathematics

Today I’m excited to push up a bright refresh to this site. The previous drab grey was more the result of indecision and inattention than a result of a design process. Feels great to actually choose a colour.

The addition of web fonts last year lent a character to the site that’s given me something to build upon. Replacing the grey has added a crispness I hope will last.

This week I resolved a new design for the home page header. The old design partially concealed the generated rosette with a dark background. Ensuring the white header text remained legible when the lettering overlapped the rosette.

In the new theme, with a white header background with black text, overlapping was not an option. With a decision to maintain alignment between the header and body text on narrower screens, the only way the header text could go was up – above the curve. The spaciousness was a welcome side effect. Implementing it though was difficult!

Please give this new design a little squish on a desktop browser. I put an awful lot of effort into making that shift a seamless responsive transition. Would be a shame if only I had enjoyed the satisfaction of it.

The magic of CSS math functions deserve more words. However, to get this post out alongside the new design I’ll resort to some links I found useful for now:
